Building Your Vocabulary

Each discipline area has its own ‘jargon’ and developing this vocabulary is an essential part of being a student. Vocabulary is something that is learnt and developed over time, and many people find medical vocabulary particularly challenging.

When learning new content, take special note of any new words that could be used in your future assignments. The more you use new terms, the better you will learn them. 

A good way to develop the discipline-specific vocabulary you'll need as a nurse is by using a spider map/diagram or a similar visual organiser (see below). Put the main category or concept in the middle, then work outwards with linked terms. It is always a good idea to include a brief definition of particularly difficult words.
